This celestial stunner is M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy, an enormous stellar city over 170,000 light-years across, making it almost twice the size of our own Milky Way galaxy. Located about 27 million light-years away in the northern constellation Ursa Major, the great bear, M101 contains over a trillion stars. Galaxies like M101 are called "grand design spirals" because of their well-defined spiral arms radiating out from the galactic centre.
